CHERRY PICKING: THE FIRST 1,207 YEARS

KYOTO CHERRY BLOSSOMS 'earliest peak since 812'

A decade ago, Burgundy decreed the earliest legal grape harvest since the  Hundred Years War.  Now Kyoto's cherry trees have reached their earliest  full bloom since the time of Japan's 52nd Emperor, Saga-tennō,  a contemporary of Charlemagne.

The 2021 sakura season in the ancient capital peaked on 26 March, according to data collected by Osaka University. The previous record was set in 1409, when the blossoms peaked on 27 March.

The BBC says "Increasingly early flowerings in recent decades are likely to be as a result of climate change scientists say, because imperial court records from Kyoto that go back to 812 AD report no earlier blossoming.

Professor Yasuyuki Aono, a researcher at Osaka Prefecture University, has

SAKURAGATE?

tracked the data back to 812.

"I have searched and collected the phenological data for full flowering date of cherry tree (Prunus jamasakura) from many diaries and chronicles written by emperors, aristocrats, governors and monks at Kyoto in historical time," he wrote.

Phenology is the study of seasons and recurring biological events.

Since about 1800, the data suggest the peak date in Kyoto has gradually been moving back from mid-April towards the beginning of the month.

The progress of the cherry blossom season is closely monitored, with the Japanese Meteorological Agency issuing forecasts of the first flowers and the peak of the season.

This year, the season began in Hiroshima on 11 March, eight days earlier than the previous record, which was set in 2004, according to Japan Forward.

This data was applied to climatic reconstruction of March mean temperature in Kyoto city. You can see the result of climatic reconstruction in our two papers. Data from the 9th to the 14th centuries was acquired and analyzed by Aono and Saito (2010; International Journal of Biometeorology, 54, 211-219). Phenology for 15th to 21st centuries was acquired and analyzed by Aono and Kazui (2008; International Journal of Climatology, 28, 905-914). If you want to use this phenological data for your research or want to quote this data in your figure, please give me the notice of that and indicate above credit for citation.

                                        COMING  SOON,
A FIELD GUIDE TO CLIMATE ANXIETY SUPPORT ANIMALS

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN   BEHAVIOR & SOCIETY

The Unbearable Whiteness of Climate Anxiety

By Sarah Jaquette Ray on March 21, 2021

The climate movement is ascendant, and it has become common to see climate change as a social justice issue. Climate change and its effects—pandemics, pollution, natural disasters—are not universally or uniformly felt: the people and communities suffering most are disproportionately Black, Indigenous and people of color. It is no surprise then that U.S. surveys show that these are the communities most concerned about climate change.

One year ago, I published a book called A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety. Since its publication, I have been struck by the fact that those responding to the concept of climate anxiety are overwhelmingly white. Indeed, these climate anxiety circles are even whiter than the environmental circles I’ve been in for decades...

If people of color are more concerned about climate change than white people, why is the interest in climate anxiety so white? Is climate anxiety a form of white fragility or even racial anxiety? Put another way, is climate anxiety just code for white people wishing to hold onto their way of life or get “back to normal,” to the comforts of their privilege? ...

My book has connected me to a growing community focused on the emotional dimensions of climate change... Dealing with feelings of climate anxiety will require the existential tools I provided in A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety, but it will also require careful attention to extremism and climate zealotry. We can’t fight climate change with more racism...

We need to channel grief toward collective liberation... It is a surprisingly short step from “chronic fear of environmental doom,” as the American Psychological Association defines ecoanxiety, to xenophobia and fascism...

Breathing New Life into Brown Coal Plants

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

The farce of government agencies and climate warriors celebrating new CO2 belching coal plants which produce “clean hydrogen” is gathering momentum. Australia’s People’s Republic of Victoria has stolen the march on US green hydrogen efforts...

Dirty coal to hydrogen: Trial aims for clean-energy solution

Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy and Australian state of Victoria plan to create first international hydrogen-supply chain...

the next big step will be to ship cargo on the world’s first liquefied hydrogen carrier ...

Australia, already dominant in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade, is hoping liquefied hydrogen will give it a greener market for its coal and gas.

Hydrogen economy will destroy the Ozone Layer            and replace it with ice.

Hydrogen is the lightest of gases and leaks easily from containment. Produced and consumed in the quantities needed to power the economy... the gas will rise through the atmosphere until it reaches the stratosphere... destroying the ozone layer and substituting a layer of ice crystal, altering the earth’s albedo...

I’ll post this same comment... to all the smart eco warrior communities, where the libtard warmunists... raise taxes on fossil fuel to subsidise those dirty hydrogen plants?

FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT FOR CARBON BLACK DOWN UNDER

17 December 2020

The Story of Rupert Murdoch, in Time Magazine Covers

New research reveals massive scale of News Corp climate scepticism

The data is in: News Corp produces and amplifies climate scepticism on an industrial scale.

Lies, Debates, and Silences:

How News Corp produces climate scepticism in Australia

is an explosive new report, commissioned by GetUp, that reveals the staggering levels of climate scepticism peddled by major News Corp newspapers.
At the recent News Corp AGM Rupert Murdoch told shareholders,
“There are no climate change deniers around, I can assure you.”

This will not suprise readers of Climate Wars, which has  covered the Newscorp semiotic carbon cycle since 2013:

Australia's inexhaustible soft coal deposits arise from the continuous fossilization of  the cellulose-rich  Murdoch newspapers that swell antipodean landfills as fast as Rupert can print them. Once buried, Newcorp headlines form anthropocene coal seams shallow as the science writing in The Australian or The Daily Telegraph.

Metamorphosis converts this cheap to data mine and highly inflammatory op-ed material into advertorials praising the environmental benefits of mining, creating a biogeosemiotic cycle that assures that more money can be made digging up Australian coal than Andrew Bolt can spend on digging up dirt on fair dinkum climate scientists.

Once read and buried, pre-fossilized Murdoch editorial content  decays into puff pieces on clean coal that can be exported and exchanged for Chinese printing presses as the global biogeochemical cycle of carbon black printer's ink progresses.

As an environmentally responsible publisher, Newscorp diligently recycles op-eds from one Coal Coast newspaper to another, using only fresh newsprint and ink.  While the deforestation of Canada to mine tar sand provides Newscorp with an ample supply of journalistic pulp, it is harder make ink than manufacture news, as it entails mixing clean coal  tar with carbon black obtained by frakking & cracking natural gas.

So tell President Biden : only reviving the Keystone XL pipeline can help save the environment by cutting the energy cost of delivering ink to Australia from Alberta's beaver infested wilderness!

BLACK SWAN WITH BEYOND BURGER STUFFING

IS CANCEL CULTURE  AN EXAMPLAR OF EMERGENT BEHAVIOR?

The Most IntolerantWins:

The Dictatorship of

the Small Minority

Nassim Nicholas Taleb

NISSIM TALEB

The best example I know that gives insights into the functioning of a complex system is with the following situation. It suffices for an intransigent minority –a certain type of intransigent minorities –to reach a minutely small level, say three or four percent of the total population, for the entire population to have to submit to their preferences. Further, an optical illusion comes with the dominance of the minority: a naive observer would be under the impression that the choices and preferences are those of the majority. If it seems absurd, it is because our scientific intuitions aren’t calibrated for that (fughedabout scientific and academic intuitions and snap judgments; they don’t work and your standard intellectualization fails with complex systems, though not your grandmothers’ wisdom).

"In the U.S. and Europe, “organic” food companies are selling more and more products precisely because of the minority rule and because ordinary and unlabeled food may be seen by some to contain pesticides, herbicides, and transgenic genetically modified organisms, “GMOs” with, according to them, unknown risks. (What we call GMOs in this context means transgenic food, entailing the transfer of genes from a foreign organism or species). Or it could be for some existential reasons, cautious behavior, or Burkean conservatism –"

The main idea behind complex systems is that the ensemble behaves in way not predicted by the components. The interactions matter more than the nature of the units. Studying individual ants will never (one can safely say never for most such situations), never give us an idea on how the ant colony operates. For that, one needs to understand an ant colony as an ant colony, no less, no more, not a collection of ants. This is called an “emergent” property of the whole, by which parts and whole differ because what matters is the interactions between such parts. And interactions can obey very simple rules. The rule we discuss in this chapter is the minority rule...

The War on Free Speech Is About

To Get a Lot Uglier

The awful events of January 6 accelerated trends in left-of-center circles, particularly within media and technology companies.

MATT WELCH | REASON APRIL 2021

One week after being trapped inside the United States Capitol... Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.) suggested one possible federal government response: convening a national commission on media literacy.

"We're going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment ..."

The road to speech restrictionism is paved with political rhetoric about protecting the proletariat from falsehoods.,. Donald Trump, before he was elected president, vowed to "open up our libel laws" as a remedy for "negative and horrible and false articles."

Thankfully, Trump's implausible threat—there are no federal laws governing libel, for starters—foundered on the same rocks that will thwart any Ocasio-Cortez attempt to have the feds arbitrate falsehoods and "rein in" free expression. America's legal and cultural speech traditions are the strongest on the planet, and the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts has been vigorous in defending the First Amendment...

But that doesn't mean AOC-style censorship will be cauterized in the post-Trump era. To the contrary.

The awful events of January 6 accelerated trends in left-of-center circles, particularly within media and technology companies. Shocked at the sight of a violent mob lending street muscle to a lame-duck president's conspiracy theory, journalists, academics, and social media companies seemed at once to agree on a two-pronged strategy: using the most maximally negative adjectives to describe the country's still sizable Trump rump and banishing that bloc's most deplorable figures from every platform within reach.

First it was the sitting president who was sent to social-media Siberia. Soon, the Twitter-for-right-wingers site Parler found itself without web hosting services after Amazon, Apple, and Google severed all business ties within a 48-hour span...

The deplatforming mania was almost awesome to behold.

"You need to be shut down!" MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski ranted in the general direction of Facebook. "Nobody needs what you have to offer. You've destroyed this country."

Neoconservative NeverTrumper and Washington Post columnist Max Boot thundered that President Joe Biden

"needs to reinvigorate the [Federal Communications Commission] to slow the lies and sedition from Fox and other right-wing broadcasters." Otherwise, Boot warned, "the terrorism we saw on Jan. 6 may be only the beginning, rather than the end, of the plot against America."

The Associated Press sent out this scare headline to its 1,300-plus media-industry subscribers: "Extremists exploit a loophole in social moderation: Podcasts."
