Oxford City Council aims to extend smoke control area to entire city
First they came for the vegetable grillers, but I was not a Vegan.
Oxford City Council is set to widen its Smoke Control Areas to cover the entire city. replacing the existing patchwork of Smoke Control Areas with one unified zone.
Smoke Control Areas (SCAs) are intended to reduce the burning of heavily polluting fuels... SCA's are constituted to limit the quantity of smoke that can be emitted by domestic and commercial chimneys…
Oxford’s initial SCA's were established in 1958, six years after the infamous Great Smog event in London which led to around 12,000 fatalities.* Failure to abide by Smoke Control Area regulations can result in... fines up to £1,000 upon anyone found dealing or obtaining unlawful fuel for usage without an approved appliance.
Councillor Anna Railton, Cabinet Member for Zero Carbon Oxford and Climate Justice, said: "There is growing evidence about the impact of poor air quality on health.
* Wood-burning had nawt to do with the '52 Great Smog !
Faced with a freezing temperature inversion, London homes & power stations found that low-grade sulphurous coal was the only kind on the market, as the UK's less polluting "hard" coal was being exported to pay its crippling World War II debt.
The inversion trapped a thousand tons a day of sulfuric and hydrochloric acid in the Thames Valley's customary pea soup fog. Memories of this ghastly post-Victorian disaster drove the rapid end of London's coal fires & chimneysweeps once North Sea gas was discovered.
