A just monument to the Trump presidency: Bury the 500,000 COVID dead at Mar-a-Lago

Robert E. Lee's home, now Arlington National Cemetery, became a final resting place for Union soldiers in 1864. We should follow the Union example.

How can we honor the more than half-million Americans who lost their lives to COVID-19 while marking former President Donald Trump’s shameless failure to “preserve, protect and defend” this country and its Constitution? 

Easy. Let’s bury the dead at Mar-a-Lago.

This small measure of justice would have an obvious historical precedent. Arlington, the former home of Robert E. Lee that is now Arlington National Cemetery, became a final resting place for Union soldiers in the spring 1864 — Who could argue this wasn’t a just punishment? 

Families of COVID-19 victims who cannot afford a decent burial should be offered a chance for their loved ones to become permanent members of Mar-a-Lago, without paying the $200,000 membership fee Trump doubled when he “won” the presidency. 

There are now over 500,000 COVID deaths in America, and counting. Inspired by the 30 Union soldiers who rest eternally in Mrs. Lee’s rose garden, we should bury as many of them as we can at Mar-a-Lago, until every foot of the property is occupied.? 

Given 500,000 victims Mar-a Lago's 15 unbuilt acres could not alas afford grave sites larger than 17 by 11 inches.

There is another problem:  canon law proverbially requires burial  six feet under, but salt water starts four feet down on the barrier island estate. 

Trump’s team also tossed aside the Obama administration’s 69-page playbook for successfully confronting a pandemic based on learnings from containing Ebola.

Even if health experts had been able to blare a timely alarm directly in Trump’s ear, he likely wouldn’t have listened. He was too busy parroting Chinese government propaganda about the outbreak. He did this until he seemed to realize he had been conned by President Xi Jinping and then stepped up his xenophobic blathering against China, which probably helped fuel an outbreak of hate crimes against Asian Americans. 

In a just nation, there would be only one monument to Robert E. Lee — Arlington National Ceremony. Likewise, a revamped Mar-a-Lago filled with the literal reminders of the death Trump enabled and mocked would be a just monument to a monumental disaster of a presidency.

Dr. Oliver Crook Haugh of Dayton, Ohio, convicted of the murder of his father, mother and brother, on the night of November 4, 1905, was electrocuted in the annex at the Ohio penitentiary a few minutes after midnight ;the current for that purpose is supplied by the prison dynamo.

Details of the Crime

The murder of his parents and brother occurred in Dayton on the night of November 1, 1905. The house in which the Haughs lived was burned and a search of the ruins revealed the bodies of the elder Haugh, his wife and a son. All circumstances indicated that the family had been murdered and the house burned to conceal the crime.

Dr. Haugh declared he had barely escaped from the house with his life and though he denied he had committed any crime, suspicion pointed toward him, and after his arrest a strong circumstantial case was made.

His defense was insanity, but he was legally declared to be sane. It was brought out, however, that he was addicted to the use of a drug. Later attempts were made to connect him with the murder of several women at Cincinnati who were mysteriously strangled,  Mary Twohe, who died under suspicious circumstances at Loraine, Ohio, and  Mrs. Annie Patterson, who died mysteriously at Chicago.

Ferret becomes first North American endangered species to be cloned

BBC NEWS:

US scientists have successfully cloned a highly-endangered black-footed ferret 

using DNA from an identical animal that has been frozen since 1988. 

The birth of the ferret, named Elizabeth Ann, was announced by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The cloning is a first for a US endangered species.

Once thought to be extinct, all black-footed ferrets are descended from seven ancestors that were found in 1981.

Scientists say the clone will help increase the population's gene pool.

Elizabeth Ann's birth on 10 December was announced as a "bold step forward" by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on Thursday. 

She was cloned from the DNA of an animal named Willa. 

Willa was not one of the original seven ancestors. Before those ferrets were found in 1981 on a ranch in the state of Wyoming, it was believed that the species had gone extinct forever.

Willa, who has no living descendants, was captured in the wild and researchers hope that her clone will increase genetic diversity and help the severely-threatened species recover.

"Although this research is preliminary, it is the first cloning of a native endangered species in North America, and it provides a promising tool for continued efforts to conserve the black-footed ferret," said Noreen Walsh, director of the USFWS Mountain-Prairie Region

A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW

Limbaugh told 20,000,000 listeners that, according to an "expert climatologist here on staff"  the study's revelations about the palaeoclimate of the "Miocene Pliocene & Plasticine periods" proved global warming was a hoax

The next day, Limbaugh's long suffering science guy, University of Alabama climatologist Roy Spencer , posted this memo:

Yesterday (11/7/07), a "research study" was circulating on the internet which claimed to have found the "real" reason for global warming. 

Even though... the paper looked genuine ... the authors, research center, and even the scientific journal the study was published in

 did not exist.

I sent an e-mail to Rush about the issue regarding the hoax, with a copy of the "research study." Unfortunately... he thought that I was calling global warming a hoax, rather than the study.

His role in these debates provided him with an education in politics to match his earlier ones in engineering and atmospheric science. Again, he proved an adept student. When, in the mid-1970s, his friend Stephen Schneider suggested that climate scientists should brief politicians and the public systematically about the findings which were beginning to worry them, he agreed, but said it would be slow work. He and Schneider did not get their wish until the late 1980s, when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was set up: an innovation built on the success of the Montreal protocol. 

For decades he studied and catalogued the ways that humans were making changes on the level that had caused his outburst in Cuernavaca. His research covered swathes of atmospheric chemistry, notably that which occurs in the huge smoky, smoggy clouds created by forest fires and unchecked industry. In the course of that work he wrote the first influential paper[ Twilight At Noon, Ambio, 1981]  on the blacked-out sky [Sic], failed harvests and mass starvation of the hongerwinter writ large that would follow nuclear war. He was deeply committed to averting such human and ecological catastrophe. When in 1995, while running the Max Planck Institute in Mainz, he heard of his Nobel prize, he celebrated with Sektrather than champagne: not because of his modest, Dutch, cycling-to-work frugality, but because of France’s blinkered position on nuclear testing.

If, as seems quite likely, the International Commission on Stratigraphy eventually extends formal recognition to the idea of the Anthropocene, the fallout from such testing, now settled into sea-floor sediments, may well be chosen as the geological formation that marks its base. And it also seems likely that, for as long as that epoch lasts, those who study it will be following the lead of Paul Crutzen.■

Someone Wrote ‘Trump’ 

on a Manatee’s Back

Federal officials are seeking information related to a Florida manatee discovered with the word “Trump” carved into the algae on its back earlier this week in the Homosassa River, about 75 miles north of Tampa.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the incident. As of late Friday, however, the agency had no updates. 

The Center for Biological Diversity has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction of whoever defaced the manatee. The center’s Florida director, Jacklyn Lopez, said she received more than 100 calls and emails from people expressing outrage and checking to see if the manatee was hurt—it was not, Lopez said.

Representative Greene went on to explain:

"space solar generators"- devices concocted by those hoping to "replace coal and oil" have the power to "collect the suns energy and then beam it back to Earth"
